The Martial Artist Who Can’t Spell…

Sometimes, as a martial artist, it pays to be a poor speller.

I, for one, was a terrible studint. (Ah, I couldn’t resist. I’m just kiddin’ around. I know that’s not how terrible is spelled.) 🙂

Oddly enough, online… poor spelling can open a whole new world of prospective students and martial art school owner marketing opportunities for you.

For example, do you know how many people mis-spell “marital arts” when searching Google?

Well, take a peek:

In case you can’t see that…

According to Google’s own keyword tool, there are over 1,600 local searches in a single month just for the mis-spelled word “marital arts”.

1 thousand 6 hundred searches A MONTH!

It’s crazy, right?

Want to know what’s even crazier?…

There are barely any school owners doing any advertising (PPC – i.e. Google Adwords) for those people.

Check it out:

There is only 1 ad being displayed for me when I search “marital arts”.

And, really, that ad was only for martial arts supplies.

So, what does that mean for you?

Well, you could have an advertisement for your martial arts school displayed only when someone in your geographic area does a search on Google for “marital arts”… and it would cost you around .10 cents each time one of those people clicked your ad.

With a little search engine optimization (i.e. distributing a couple of articles on and getting some backlinks) you could also probably quite easily get into the top 3 organic listings for that term… since it appears most martial arts school owners are completely ignoring the mis-spelling.

It makes me think… and it should make you think…

What other mis-spellings are there that could provide you with a whole category of prospective martial arts students and searches that are not being addressed?

[Note: Sure, this kind of untapped source of new students is quite a find. BUT, I still believe the major opportunity right now for martial arts school owners is with having an optimized Martial Arts School Facebook Page.

Not only does it provide you with incredible local marketing opportunities. Soon, not having one will cost you new students as more and more people search Facebook first before making a buying/purchasing decision. And since it’s free, there’s no excuses not to do it right away.
